The story

Prophet Yunus was one of Allah’s messengers. He called his people towards the truth, but they did not respond as he hoped.

Their rejection became heavy for him. In a moment of anger, Yunus departed before the matter was complete. He travelled until he reached a ship already loaded with passengers and goods.

The ship moved out across the water. Then the sea became dangerous, and the people on board feared that the ship might sink. They decided that someone would have to leave the ship, and they drew lots.

Yunus was chosen.

He went into the sea, and a great fish swallowed him by Allah’s command.

Yunus was now surrounded by darkness: the darkness of the night, the darkness beneath the sea, and the darkness inside the fish.

There was nowhere to run and no person nearby to call for help.

But Allah could hear him.

In that deep darkness, Yunus called upon Allah with a prayer that has been remembered by Muslims ever since:

“There is no god except You. You are perfect. I have truly been among the wrongdoers.”

His prayer began with Tawhid. He declared that Allah alone deserved worship. He praised Allah’s perfection. Then he admitted his own mistake.

Yunus did not make excuses. He did not blame the sea, the ship, the people, or the fish. He returned to Allah with humility.

Allah responded to him and saved him from distress.

The fish cast Yunus onto an open shore while he was weak and ill. Allah caused a gourd vine to grow over him, giving him shade and protection.

The same Allah who had heard him in the darkness cared for him on the shore.

After Yunus recovered, Allah sent him back to his people. This time, they believed, and Allah allowed them to enjoy life for a time.

The story of Yunus is not an excuse for becoming angry whenever people do not accept our advice. It teaches us that a believer should remain patient and follow Allah’s guidance carefully.

It also teaches us that a mistake does not have to become the end of a person’s story. Yunus turned back to Allah, and Allah rescued him.

Sometimes a child may make a wrong choice and then feel too ashamed to pray. They may think, “I have made so many mistakes that Allah will not listen to me.”

The prayer of Yunus teaches the opposite. Allah hears the person who returns sincerely. A Muslim should admit the wrong, seek forgiveness, and take the next step towards obedience.

The prayer is short enough to remember, but it carries a great meaning. It reminds us that Allah is the only true God, that Allah is free from every imperfection, and that we need His forgiveness.

Yunus was not saved because the darkness became less dark. He was saved because Allah heard his call.

When you feel trapped by fear, sadness, guilt, or confusion, remember Yunus. Turn towards Allah before you know how the situation will end.

The shore may not appear immediately. The answer may not come in the way you expect. But Allah is never unable to hear, guide, forgive, or rescue.
